Shane fidgeted for a long moment. There was probably a reason he waited until Ilya was basically asleep to ask. “How did you know you loved me, Ilya?”

“Ah, the stages of grief,” Shane said. “I know them well.”
Ilya laughed through his nose, turned to stare at Shane in wonder. “Yes. I think it was exactly like the stages of grief.” Shane lightly smacked the back of his hand against Ilya’s chest, so Ilya caught his fingers and squeezed.
The best way he could understand the way he fell in love was visually. He saw love as layers, which he kept dropping down into without any warning and with no way to climb back out again.
At the cottage, Shane and Ilya have a chance to talk about all of the things they were unable to before. They learn about favorite animals, revisit old stories, and, of course, try to unpack the way love works.
