Summary
Twenty eight year old Carol Sturka is an aspiring author, presently working a temp position at Brooks & Bennet Law Offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She's also a self-proclaimed misanthrope, insulted by romance, holding firm in her assertion that to need another person is weakness, and to want them is even worse. So, literally running face first into the most gorgeous woman she's ever seen is maybe the worst case scenario. It's about to be her lucky day.
Helen Umstead is being careful. She understands all too well what it is to have your life feel completely out of your control, and she isn't about to let it happen again. She finally has a real job, with room for forward momentum, and her own apartment. She can manage the subtle chaos of daily life, and she feels stable for the first time ever. So, that restlessness nagging at her from the pit of her stomach, waking her up at all hours of the night, really isn't helpful. The monotony is what's best for her, or at least that's what she tells herself. Getting involved with the whirlwind that is Carol Sturka is a risk. A big one. And she just might have to take it.

For the first time since the Zone came to be, a researcher who did not carry a passport of one of the Eastern Commonwealth member-states had crossed the brutalistically opulent threshold of the Alferov's Institute for Anomalous Research. Some sensationalist outlets, mostly ones west of the River Oder and East of the hump of Kamchatka, dubbed it the most significant feat of scientific cooperation between East and West since the Souz-Apollo orbital docking. Within the Commonwealth excitement appeared somewhat differently - the City saw a slightly increased amount of jolly fit men with thick moustaches, and a tendency to move in groups of two or five. They were not behaving like a usual Trash on the beat, though.
And so, as ever, even if people whom Yura Beletsky could call friends kinda knew what was going on, most of them, and chiefly him, could not be bothered to give a shit. There was a party in the Molodzyozhny this evening, as ever.
