The Moriarty picnics were a memorial to these peaceful times, repeated year after year. First in 1866, a few months after the fire that broke out on the family estate and the destruction of the remaining members of the family, then at the end of Louis and William’s first year at Eton, and so on, leaving behind all their successes, joys and sorrows whenever they settled beneath the branches of the willow.
