Instead, Ilya and Shane remain playing for Montreal and Boston, get married in secret, and slowly come out to friends and family on their own terms. After getting married, they finally feel safe to come out to their teams. Montreal reacts badly, but instead of making himself smaller, Shane realizes that he would never be enough for them and cuts his losses.
I remain faithful to these complex characters and the reality of the world they live in while also allowing Shane the time and space to realize that his love for both Ilya and hockey are all that matter and the consequences are not so important.
