Shane set the glass down and turned his head slowly, the stranger’s hood-covered face coming into view. He was looking at Shane with wide-eyed surprise.
“Rozanov,” Shane replied flatly.

Shane Hollander suffered a career-ending injury in 2014. Later that year, Ilya Rozanov medically retired fresh off of his first Cup win, the circumstances unclear. In less than a year, the hockey world had lost their two biggest rising stars. As well as a budding relationship nobody had even known about.
It’s 2022 now, and Shane hasn’t seen Ilya since. He's tried not to think about it, about whatever they were or what they could’ve become, both on and off the ice. He lives in Toronto now, just far enough away from the life he’d left behind. Only, the world has other plans in mind, when a chance encounter at a bar on New Year’s Day brings 2014 screaming back for him to confront.

Ilya Rozanov sustained a bad injury late last season that he just can't seem to shake. He feels himself start to slowly unravel, unable to face the fact that the one thing he has always been able to hold on to may not be his at all anymore. As his performance declines, his mental health begins to take a tumble with it. He tries his best to save face, to shoulder this burden alone, but his team mates and husband grow concerned as Ilya isolates himself completely.
Set after the long game, where Ilya needs therapy, is in denial, and at war with himself.

Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.
