It’s overwhelming, how it just stretches on into the horizon. Sirius is used to mountains, to hard stops and interrupted views, to hilltops reaching toward Heaven. But this is horizontal movement, the promise that the world stretches out in front of you, that you can run or swim as far as you want and still have more to go. Sirius smiles— because there’s joy in it, oddly, in the assurance that he is so small and insignificant, that anything could’ve happened in the states that stand behind him, and the waves would crash against this shore, all the same.
