Mike walked back to the study and grabbed his laptop. Just before turning around he hesitated and glanced down at his desk drawer. Slowly, Mike ran his hand over the handle and pulled the rickety, varnished handle out. A small black box sat buried in the back of the drawer. Mike cautiously reached in as though the box might burst into flames on contact; instead, he pocketed the box and started back towards the kitchen. All at once, he heard glass shatter and Jack’s shrill barking. Mike’s heart started thrumming in his chest as he jogged down the hallway, sharp beats piercing his chest. He turned the corner to see Will.
Will stared at the tv blankly, glass fragments littered around his feet. His shoulders shuddered violently as Mike carefully came up behind him, shooing Jack away as he moved. Mike wrapped his arms around Will’s shoulders and neck as he watched the tv in awe.
“They actually did it.” Will choked out, eyes swimming with tears.
“Yeah. Yeah, they actually did it. Turn around Will.”
