And when you come across those people, although rare, there are times when you get home after a 12-hour shift, exhausted with sweat embedded into your navy blue scrubs, your body sore as you lie under the covers and stare blankly at the ceiling, yet that patient is the last thing dwindling in your mind before sleep takes you away. You cannot escape the thoughts of them, the memories of the shift replaying in your mind like a reality show on repeat. It does not let you rest. Even if sleep comes to whisk you away from the reruns, they are in your dreams, waiting for you to make your rounds.
