Verso hurriedly presses his own hand against Monoco’s, trying to calm him down. His bark was dry against his skin. Grounding. Lovely. “It’s just a migraine, mon vieux. I’ll be fine once it passes.”
There’s a pause as Monoco’s urgent panic, explosive without a target, is simmered down to a flickering wick when the puzzle pieces assembled. His grip turns gentle, still heavy, but less severe. The tender “oh” he breathes out has Verso’s abdomen clenching with something other than queasiness.
Verso has a migraine. Monoco takes care of him. Long overdue actions are taken…and maybe some other long things as well (wink wink nudge nudge)

“You know what, Kojiro?” He’s close. A little too close. He might have misjudged the distance between the two of them, because his glasses are the only thing between the two of them. His nose is pressed against Kojiro’s.
“What?” Kojiro breathes.
“I think,” Kaoru whispers, “that you’re fucking lying.”
Kojiro’s eyes widen, then. “What the fuck would I be lying about,” he barks, and he’s pushing back against Kaoru now, tense and ready for a fight, “Do you need to get your eyes checked, four-eyes?”
“I think,” Kaoru smirks, enjoying the way Kojiro’s jaw visibly tenses, “That you’re just a sad, pathetic gorilla who can’t get game. And that you’re using the apparent fact that your dick is too big to hide it.”
(or: kaoru's had enough of kojiro complaining that people are intimidated by his size. how big could be possibly be?)

Then Verso felt it, a strange pulling sensation, not quite in his foot but through it. Like something was being drawn out of him, gentle and careful.
The sensation intensified, and Verso watched in fascination as faint tendrils of color—his color, the gold of his chroma—began to drift from his skin toward Monoco. It moved like ink in water, curling and flowing in patterns that shouldn't exist in the air but did anyway.
When the light faded, there was a man sitting in front of him.
A naked man holding Verso's foot with hands that were now flesh instead of wood, skin tanned and weathered and very, very warm.
"Holy shit," Verso breathed.
In which a lazy afternoon leads to new discoveries.

The words landed like stones. Verso stared at him, mind struggling to process what that meant.
"You have—" He couldn't finish.
"Verso… defaulted all of us to Alpha," Monoco continued, and there was something raw in his voice now. "Every Gestral."
Oh.
Oh gods.
In which Verso's heat suppressants run out, forcing him to confront feelings he thought were impossible.

After years alone on the isolated mountain that was Frozen Hearts with only an old paintbrush to keep him company, Verso had frankly gotten a little stir crazy. He had already been struggling mentally, and in a more recent development, physically. He was only human, after all, and a giant Gestral of wood and fur couldn't satisfy the innate human desire for intimacy. No matter how many times he rutted into literal wood.
So when Monoco returns one day spewing the idea of turning himself human in an awfuly morbid way, Verso can't help but entertain the idea.

Summary

Verso had stopped visiting the Canvas decades ago. Where once he was a child, carefree and full of wonder and whimsy, he had grown up practically in the blink of an eye. Visitations grew few and far between, and they had grown shorter still. There reached a point where visits came decades apart, and Verso would look different each time. Older, almost certainly. Growing from what was once a small, arguably frail little boy to an elegant man in a suit and tie, his frame filling out from lanky teenager to handsome bachelor. No longer did he spend near as much time in the Canvas, always worried about his appearance and always with far more worries in his gaze than he did the last time he visited.
Until he stopped visiting at all, leaving the Canvas to its own devices.
