Riku had come home. At least in the sense of returning to the place of his birth and upbringing. But he returned as an intruder. A specter, dark as the shadows he wandered, that blurred an otherwise happy scene. Just like in so many of those ghost stories he would show Riku as a child.
Before speaking to Xion on the play island, Riku goes on a small tour of the home he left behind, and encounters some of the people he left behind as well.

“Oi!” she calls to him. “What the hell happened?
Ichigo’s panting heavily, leaning over with his hands on his knees. He doesn’t answer, but when he looks up, his face is thrown into harsh relief by the fluorescents. It’s an expression Ikumi’s never seen on anyone younger than forty.

Summary
Rukia thinks it is best to leave Ichigo be after his powers fade, believing she ruined his life. She takes some small consolation in the part of his fighting spirit she is convinced she is now carrying with her, inspiring her to become strong like he was.
She does not, of all things, expect to wind up hosting his inner Hollow.
The Hollow expects to fade away and die when Ichigo’s powers disappear, without his king ever learning the truth about him. He is used to being abandoned and forgotten, and where exactly is he supposed to go now, anyway?
And yet he lingers on, tossed against all reason into Kuchiki Rukia’s inner world.
(In which two people, both separated from and haunted by Ichigo, eventually find a surprising amount of solace in each other’s company.)
