They weren’t made for talking.
It’s hard making peace with someone who’s done nothing but torment you, but they make it work somehow.

Almost didn't bookmark because the thought of rereading this fic made me feel sick. I'm not sure why I'm so affected but I can't stop thinking about Cloud's situation and how he lost everything twice and how he'll never know the extent of what happened to him. Genuinely brilliant, the reverse-chronological timeline lends itself to suspense and the author does a great job of misdirecting the reader. I'm not sure how much is taken from Christopher Nolan's "Memento" but I don't think I'll ever watch it knowing how this fic ends.

He could remember climbing up onto the roof of his family’s bungalow so that he could get the best possible view of the silver-haired hero, young and perfect as he marched through town in his military regalia.
The second time Cloud saw Sephiroth was when his home went up in flames.
The third and final time, he would slide a knife between his ribs, straight into his heart.

2) The other half of Project S took after their father.
3) Blue eyes contemplated him narrowly for several seconds, and then Genesis’ smirk came back, lying on his face more easily, somehow. “So brothers-in-arms to the skirmish shall we hence?”
4) It felt wrong to be relying on anybody but Mother, but Mother…only cared about Sephiroth, and it wasn’t fair. Loz sniffled. “Will she take care of Yazoo, too?”
5) Sephiroth nodded, and bent forward, and peered at the squashed little pink thing until it stirred, objecting probably to cool air on its face. “What’s his name?”
“Cloud."
6) “Cloud,” he said, his fingers tightening on nothing because he had cast his own sword down, atop the coiled piles of his hair, “do you not remember?”
(Five times in five worlds where Sephiroth was somebody's brother, and one where he wasn't anymore.)

“You know, it's damn rude to enter someone else's place while they're not even there,” Cloud grouses. It's maybe a little ridiculous given that they've been meeting like this for over a year now, but. That unnamed burning anger underneath his skin has to go somewhere.
After tossing his keys on the counter, he walks up to Sephiroth’s side, opens the cupboard above the sink and takes out a glass.
Fills it.
Drains it.
Sephiroth still hasn't said anything, which makes those burning sparks rise again. Except, the moment Cloud whirls around to face him, suddenly arms like steel catch him under the armpits and unceremoniously lift him onto the counter between the fridge and the sink.
“What are y—”
“Cloud.” Because he's ridiculously tall, Sephiroth is still looming over him even in this position. His gaze is as unyielding as his voice as he cups Cloud’s face with one hand and tilts it back, forcing eye contact. “What has happened?”
