Summary
He made another exaggeratedly pained noise as John pulled the hook he was holding from Arthur’s torso, tugging the thread taut.
“What?”
“Oh you’re doing it like that? Oh! He’s toast.”
“Then fucking help me, god damn it, Kayne!”
Kayne could’ve told the little king a number of things. He could’ve told him that helping wasn’t part of the deal. He could’ve laughed in his face and trudged away. But he simply stopped. He snapped away his bag of gardettos and crouched to lean over Arthur.
He could help him. He had the ability—the choice.
//
Or, Arthur is dying. Kayne wants to tell him something before he goes.

Summary
Arthur Lester didn't believe in ghosts. So, checking the attic after his daughter drew a creepy yellow demon named "Mister Doe" is just to make sure there are't any animals up there. No other reason. Except the Piano that looks freshly cleaned. The piano that is still in tune. The piano that when Arthur started playing it, summoned a demon in a yellow cloak.
Arthur Lester totally doesn't believe in ghosts. Or Gods. Or Reincarnation. Right?

Without fail, every day for about two months now, a stranger to Parker and Arthur positions himself outside their office.

“She was such a wonderful little girl. I often think of her - wait, did you say eight?” She asks in confusion. Her time within the Lester household had been well over a decade ago - Faroe would be closer to fourteen if she were here -
“Faroe, darling!” Arthur turns and calls behind him, making Tess startle once more. “Come say hello to Tess.”

Summary
It was almost as if time was beginning to whittle away at him in a way he wasn’t sure he'd felt before, like he was aware of every moment, and yet felt none of it at all. It was painfully numb—as close as he could get to feeling pain—like he was just going through motions that left less of a mark in his immortal skin than they used to. The excitement of hearing the bloody wet pop of a skull shatter apart didn’t feel as right as it did the last time.
The last time he’d felt like this– well. That was around the time he’d met Arthur. It felt like a sign then that Arthur came about when he did, when he was sure he’d have to claw apart his own skull just to feel something. He tilted his head, screwed up his face in frustration.
“Huh,” he said, to the Arthur pinned underneath him, abdomen split open and spilling out blood slick insides. “Everything is starting to feel… repetitive lately. Have you ever felt that before?”

Summary
The man who climbs into the back of your cab looks just like any other man living in Arkham. That isn’t saying much, of course, given that they all look like any other person until the shit hits the fan, but there truly is no way to tell. That said, when the man begins muttering to himself, you’re not surprised in the least. You’ve been doing this job for far too long, and you’ve seen far worse.
(Some things do not wash out of upholstery, which is a fact that you’ve come to know quite intimately. You have a strict no-fluids policy now, which you think is perfectly fair and reasonable of you. The horrors can go ooze all over the back of somebody else’s taxi, thank you very much.)

Faroe never settles down without at least one story, but tonight she has no interest in any of the printed books they currently have on hand. That's no trouble, though. Until they can pay another visit to the library, Arthur can just spin her a tale he remembers hearing from his own parents...

Summary
But his king was nowhere to be found, and Arthur Lester was drowning.
He heard a mumble, and he realized Arthur was clawing at the floor, digging his nails into the hardwood.
Kayne tilted his head, “Hm? What’s that?”
Arthur cleared his throat, voice still thin and raspy. “Don’t go.”

Or, Kayne gives himself another wager. He did not expect his desire for the wrong outcome.

Summary
Kayne kneeled, just to get a closer look. He deserved to admire his own work, especially after all the effort he’d put in. Arthur’s head was supine towards the stars. Bloodstained hair spilled over his eyes—or, well, lack thereof. His hollowed sockets flowed with dark blood, dripping down the sharp bones of his cheeks in wax-like drops, soaking against the peat of the bog and pooling around his head like a halo. His lips were parted, bluing, begging to be kissed.
He was beautiful. It was unfair.

Summary
Hypnagogia is the transitional state from wakefulness to sleep, also defined as the waning state of consciousness during the onset of sleep. Mental phenomena that may occur during this "threshold consciousness" include hallucinations, lucid dreaming, and sleep paralysis.

Kayne is mostly sure there’s a reason why he’s in this hallway in particular. He hears people, wondering if that’s why he’s here. There are a series of short doors along the hall, exposing the bare feet or the shoes underneath. Changing rooms.
“We don't exactly have a lot of room for choice.” Arthur wavers, setting a shirt down.
Ah, that’s why Kayne is here.

“What do you want?”
“Good question! That I kind of already answered.” The being scoffed. “Arthur, don’t any of you listen at all?” The upbeat voice returned. “I want a thrilling conversation! More to the point, I wanted to meet you, and thought to myself, ‘Hey! Why not give the guy a meal while we talk?’ I mean, you’ve been starved for months and months now, and I’d prefer to make a good first impression. Be a good host, you know?"
He gasped, clapped his hands together, "Speaking of!" and snapped — an electric whoosh and some light thuds and clatter.
"Dinner is served!"
---Arthur Lester (no not that one) has been stuck in the prison pits for a very long time. When he wakes up in a void, with a very energetic stranger offering him food, his first thought is this is another form of torture. The stranger says he just wanted to meet Arthur, but Arthur might not have been that far off. And there are far worse things than being tortured by one half of The King in Yellow.

"What? Lost for words at how wonderful it feels to mesh your entire soul and existence with mine own flesh?", Kayne interrupted, hands slick with blood finding Arthur's.
"I— I guess?", Arthur muttered.
"You guess?", John replied, evidently baffled. "What do you mean 'you guess'?! You just signed away your and my autonomy forever and 'you guess'?!"
Or:
Kayne accidentally marries himself.

Summary
John realizes what’s happening on the sixth loop.
In retrospect, it’s fucking embarrassing that it took him so long to figure it out—that this isn’t an illusion, and it’s not him finally going mad, and it’s not a dream or a trick or a torment devised by the King to fuck with them. It’s not like he doesn’t know that time is as malleable as clay in the hands of gods. The Dark World taught him many lessons that he’d like to forget, and that’s one of them.
It’s just been a little hard to concentrate when Arthur keeps fucking dying.
.
When John decides to stay with Arthur as he bleeds out on the King’s plateau, he expects them both to die. Instead, they find themselves brought back in time to the first moment they stepped onto the plateau—and Arthur has no recollection of their confrontation with the King. John soon realizes that they’re stuck in a time loop that restarts every time Arthur dies.

By now, Dr. Jeffery Orrett was used to things going, well, oddly at nights in Arkham Psychiatric Hospital.
So, he didn't think too much of it when a newer patient awoke with a scream, arching his back and pulling against the restraints on his arms and legs. Simply signaled to a nearby nurse to get a sedative ready and walked closer to the thrashing man.

It's not every day that you get the chance to kill yourself without actually dying yourself, you know. It's almost… Well, not almost, it's absolutely exhilarating if you think about it! As long as you don't dwell too much on the hows and the sheer absurdity of a workload ahead of you, because — ha! — the dream has an annoying tendency to split and break off, forming too many smaller "you's" in the process. Ugh. Honestly, it was hard enough to exist as himself, but imagining billions of others doing fuck all elsewhere? Who thought this was a good design?

Sometimes the entity you kind of work for resurrects you after you defeat the big bad. And sometimes, you might get overwhelmed with emotions and so you kiss that entity. Arthur Lester does just that and enjoys it way too much.
