“Well, sire,” he said “That is the common consensus among… the chatter.”
“The chatter,” Arthur repeated and his mind flashed to all the kindness Merlin had received from other nobles. Dear God.
Or
Merlin has all of Camelot (and neighboring kingdoms) wrapped around his finger and Arthur is beginning to resign himself to the fact his servant somehow has more power than he does.

Summary
Some upstart lord kidnaps Merlin with the intention of torturing him for information on how to get into Camelot. Then, he plans on killing him and presenting the body to the king. Merlin thought this would be an interesting kidnapping, maybe something fun and new — he was wrong. Right before he summons the will to escape, the Knights of the Round Table come for him and find him beaten and bloody. Too bad Merlin's natural sass is still going strong. But he knows he's safe now, and lets the Knights take care of him.

Summary
The first time the nobles saw Merlin rein Arthur in, they thought it was a coincidence.
The second time, they thought Merlin was either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid.
By the third, the knights had started making jokes about it.
By the fourth, the servants had learned to look for Merlin whenever Arthur's temper began to rise.
And by the fifth, even the nobles understood something that had taken them years to recognize.

Summary
Several years after Camlann magic has returned to Camelot, but Merlin and Arthur are perhaps unhappier than ever before. Merlin has been sick, really sick, and Arthur doesn't know how to help him. Merlin on the other hand tries to push everyone away. Eaten up by guilt because Arthur still does not know about his magic. His illness is a welcome excuse to keep his distance.
They're having a miserable time of it until Arthur and Gwen decide that they cannot go on as they are and that Merlin and Lancelot deserve the truth.

When Merlin hears a rumour that Arthur is looking for a new servant, he dismisses it as impossible. Then an old spell lets him overhear fragments of a conversation, and suddenly the rumours don’t seem so impossible after all.
