“I’m not really hungry…”
Mike lied. But it’s almost like Will saw right through him. Still, he didn’t say what Mike wanted to hear - not that Mike even knew what he wanted to hear. Maybe he didn’t want to be alone with Will, at least not in this state, he was worried he’d say something embarrassing or fess up about him and Jane.
“I could bring you a plate”
Will said, warmly, tilting his head. A caring smile creeped onto his face and a fuzzy feeling creeped into Mike’s chest.
“Yeah… thanks”
Mike smiled. He knew his best friend like the back of his hand and so did Will.

Vecna didn't wait. the Upside Down has crashed into Hawkins and the party is in trouble. The party has devised a plan on how to escape with the ones they love but Mike somehow seems to have bigger problems. Will. The world is ending, but not his world.

The power goes out and Mike and Will are “forced” to share a room/bed to stay warm, confronting their mixed up feelings for each other under the cover of darkness.
I read “you took my heart (i was sleeping)“ and imagined if Mike was exhausted the whole time because he was up every night with Will having night terrors he doesn’t remember. I would suggest reading that story first,
I added a lot, namely interactions with the rest of the party and focused more on Will’s friendships with Jane and Holly. -

The upside down being gone now leaves Will and Mike with new problems; adulthood. These two have been through lots of ‘Strange Things’ together and growing apart was not something they ever imagined would happen to them. Will went off to college to pursue in his art career, while Mike stayed back in Hawkins working as a librarian while he starts writing his first book. Although both have moved forward with their lives, some things just never grow old.

But it’s not so bad (He’s lying, it fucking sucks) at least he has the boy in the bed next to his, and relatively regular mealtimes and- Yeah, he's having trouble coming up with anything positive.

The truck jostles slightly, a constant back and forth as its inhabitants prepare themselves for a venture into the Upside Down, one last time. One last fight to end it all. One last time risking their lives for the fate of the world. If every time before this hadn’t been their “final fight,” maybe they wouldn’t have felt as grim as they plunged further into hell.
Vecna’s voice was like nails on a chalkboard. Unheard by all but one, the monster’s face was twisted into something that someone might have called a smile when he was still human. Now, though, it was more like watching a rabid dog bear its teeth. He ran a hand over Will Byers’s hair as he spoke.
“Do you think you’re worthy of him?” Vecna’s long, clawed fingers slid gently over Will’s face, but Will wasn’t frightened. He continued speaking idly with his mother, a small smile on his face. “Doesn’t he deserve better?” On the other side of the truck a pair of brown eyes had slid out of focus, body rigid, unwilling to move despite its owner’s protests. Terror seized them as they watched Vecna taunt them, gnarled hands placed gently onto Will’s shoulders.

Later, as Mike stares at his ceiling, coloured only by the warmth of a nightlight and one forgotten glow-in-the-dark star, he speaks a reassurance. “We’re going to win, Will. For real, this time.”
Will’s hands twitch where they rest on his pillow.
Mike lolls his head to the side. “We’ve been preparing for this.”
Will doesn’t look appeased. “I don’t know, Mike,” he breathes. “I really don’t know.”
Mike tells himself that he knows, so Will doesn’t have to. They’re going to win.
Deeper into the night, when Will wakes screaming, Mike hesitates for only a second before he cradles him tight to his chest. He doesn’t push when Will won’t speak of what he saw; he only whispers words of comfort, soft and sweet and completely unfounded.
My ST5 rewrite, because it hurts to think about, and I want to overwrite my memory.
