The festival is over. No nightmares last night—a small victory Evangeline doesn't take for granted.
She slips from bed in the pre-dawn gray, leaving Eirika to rest, and does what she always does: finds work. Dismantling vendor stalls, hauling beams, being useful. Physical labor settles her mind, keeps her hands busy.
"Just Evie," she corrects automatically when the groundskeeper calls her Lady Evangeline. The title still doesn't fit, even after all these years.
Around her, the estate wakes slowly. Breakfast with her twin Lizzy. Plans for tomorrow's village trip with their guests from another realm. Easy laughter about the festival's chaos—the performances, the damiana incident she'll never live down, finally crossing that threshold with Aine.
Everything feels manageable. Almost normal.
Until Eirika finds her in the garden, and asks how she's really feeling, and Evangeline's hand moves unconsciously to her pocket where two worn plush rabbits rest.
"I'm fine," she says. "Really."
But when evening comes, her feet carry her down a familiar path through darkening woods, to a place where white flowers grow around two small stones beneath an ancient tree.
