After Katniss takes her place on stage, Effie exhales, and, shakily, takes a few steps to the bowl with the two slips of paper. For a split second, her and Haymitch make eye contact — then she reaches into the bowl, and unfolds the piece of paper.
Maybe it's his mind playing old tricks on him, but he swears that he witnesses the small gasp from Effie that seals his fate even this far across the square. She barely says the name aloud, but Haymitch catches it. Of course he does.
"Peeta Mellark."
Because for the second time in his life, Haymitch hasn't been chosen as tribute.
"I volunteer as tribute."
And for the second time in his life, he's going into the arena anyway.
