Antonio and I were raised in the same church. Our mothers were neighbors who traded spices and books on weary afternoons before their husbands returned. Then, we never believed God was so great a deal, only a big man in the sky we said thanks to for food. We certainly didn't think it was worth dying for, but here we are. We'd grown apart as we grew older, despite sharing a choice of careers. I saw him each day in the halls, attended mass and prayer at his side, heard his voice whisper across the booth at confession, apologizing for mundane things, like an overindulgence in communion crackers and wine, or gossiping about a fellow church member.
Physically, he was tall, but lean and unimposing. He had a habit of craning his neck to be closer to who he was talking to, and I sometimes caught him being startled by butterflies in the garden. When he prayed, he finished off with a thoughtful peck to the crucifix laid against his chest, his Spanish accent prevailing powerfully over his attempt at fluent Latin. The younger members of the church could sometimes barely contain themselves when he recited the words.
He speaks better Japanese. I don't know much, but I know ‘boku’, I know ‘Kami-sama’, I know ‘satsugai’.

I intend to fill in the implied time jump, from literally where the show left off, to the epilogue where Miri is just about to go to her first day of high school, using the little milestone pictures that we see during the end credits as info.
In my attempt to keep the anime's direct inspiration in writing this, some of the dialogue is written in Rōmaji (basically: Japanese written using the Latin alphabet, instead of kanji and kana) when the phrases are recognizable; once you sound them out, anyway.
I watch anime with subtitles, so this was to mimic how I sometimes don't have to read the captions anymore to understand what I'm hearing. I try not to do it too much, but it does bring me joy to do, so I might be a little trigger happy with the Rōmaji ( ᵕ • ֊ •)
The pacing is a bit like an episode of the anime, too. Would generally benefit from watching the actual show sometime recently before reading.
