A soft noise causes him to halt.

Summary
There was a tingling sensation on Eddie’s shoulder, like pins and needles. Heart thudding, he slid down the tree to sit on the ground. His breath caught, and he paused for a second, took a deep breath in like he was about to dive into the ocean, and yanked at the neck of his t-shirt, looking down at his collarbone, eyes searching for the soulmark.
And there, scrawled in cramped handwriting, were a pair of initials that Eddie could barely make out in the dark, tattooed right above the bone. He squinted, making out an ‘R’ and with further inspection, a ‘T’ following it.
There was a moment where Eddie remained blissfully unaware, sitting in the dark forest, the chirping of the crickets and cicadas fading away to near-silent as he processed the letters, closing his eyes and thinking.

And so the rest of Zuko’s bad luck from there was less to do with such emotional tragedies, and more to do with personal pride. For example, the situation with soulmates.
Now, when Zuko first got his words, he assumed that his soulmate was probably some sort of bee fanatic. That was what anyone else would have assumed before the fateful day of the 14th of December, 2007.
But then came the references. Oh the many references, and jokes. Zuko swore to himself that the next time someone asked him if he liked jazz, he would punch them in the face.
OR:
Everyone gets their soulmarks when they’re thirteen. When Zuko wakes up on his thirteenth birthday to a soulmark that almost completely covers his arm, he isn’t sure what to expect.

‘’Well, back in the day he built this thing called the Dream Machine, trapped its victim in a kind of dream world. It seems someone found the blueprint. Spruced it up a bit.’’
A cold feeling settles in Roy’s stomach.
‘’You’re saying…’’
‘’You’re looking at the Dream Machine 2.0.’’

Summary
He’s just begun to fruitlessly pick at his hair when there’s a bang, harsh and loud, and he ducks, dropping his comb. The second one makes him tuck and roll out of the room, reaching for a weapon. He’s got his hand on a loose wingding when there comes a harsh hiss. Water under a lot of pressure cracking off of tile. Dick creaks up into a crouch, poking his head around the doorframe, staying low. His shower is suddenly working again, water hammering into the stall and sluicing out onto the floor. His drain, never very functional, appears to have given up entirely.
It takes him half the wall to find the damn pipes and turn the water off, the shower blasting like a machine gun the whole time. For a moment there’s quiet, just water dripping. His phone rings where he left it on the counter, jumping with the vibration. BRUCE, it reads. Dick answers.
“You will not fucking believe the morning I am having,” Dick says. “Everything happens to me. I’ve told you about my landlord, right?”
“Dick,” Bruce says. Something in his voice makes the hair on the back of Dick’s neck rise.

Because if anyone finds out that he breaks out of the detention center at night to fight crime with some random girl in pajamas, he’d be going to Arkham.
So now he’s just juggling a distrusting cellmate, a jail yard full of kids who hate him, growing affection for his partner in crime, and some creep dressed as a bat who keeps chasing them down…
