"Shane," Ilya says slowly. "Are you aware you are holding a cat?"
Shane has the decency to look slightly sheepish, as Ilya steps forward, the kitten peering at him with large green eyes while he reaches out a hesitant hand to lightly brush his finger against the cat's nose.
"Um, so a funny thing happened," Shane begins, and Ilya knows he's about to launch into a lengthy explanation. "We were out for our jog, and this kitten started running with us, so Anya just gently picked it up by the scruff of its neck and started carrying it, and I couldn't just leave it, you know? And when I took it from Anya it just curled up in my jacket like it knew it was safe, and I know this is kind of impulsive and our lives are crazy, but…" he finally stops and takes a deep breath, his gaze locking with Ilya's. "I think I want to keep this cat."
Anya wags her tail and barks, and Ilya looks from Shane's endless dark brown eyes down to the striking green ones that close as the kitten yawns so widely Ilya can see all of its tiny baby teeth. It's too cute. He's a goner. 'Fuck', he thinks, 'I'm totally screwed' and then promptly sneezes.

And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there; he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.
It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.
Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.
So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.

Summary
Meet Ilya Hollander-Rozanov, BSc, MSc in Economics, PhD Socioeconomics.
It's a common thing for pro athletes in russia to get at least "fictional" higher education - players are attached to some governmental university and get a diploma without actually studying. but given Rozanov is from military family his father wouldn't allow him just to buy his diploma. Then during their relationships Ilya missed Shane in Ottawa so much, that he decided that he could use spare time to get his PhD.
Shane Hollander finds it out by accident. And realizes this, maybe - probably, makes him very horny.
