When Montreal Metros attempted to push out their captain, Shane Hollander, Ottawa leapt at the chance to have the two men playing on the same team. Scoffed at by many as a politically motivated gambit and sure to fail, the gamble-that-never-was paid off big time as the team has won three of the past seven cup games. Ottawa has consistently pushed back against the established narrative, refusing to be defined by metrics others claimed were the only path to success. Instead, they seemingly laugh at all established conventions and take pride in ripping up the rulebook and winning anyway. I wanted to understand how far this philosophy went, so I was invited by Coach Wiebe and the team to join them for a week of training camp to see how much of the Centaur’s unconventional approach is media PR and how much is genuine. This is what I learned after spending a week with them on and off the ice.

It is generally accepted that omega's are prohibited from playing in the NHL, that they should be regulated to the college level leagues or the PEHL - People's Elite Hockey League, a league made specially for those whose genders are deemed unfit for the NHL.
In legal terms, the mandate is as follows:
“The National Hockey League strives for equality and will not deny a registered participant their place in a respectful, harmonious workplace environment on the basis of sex - primary or secondary -, sexual orientation, age, race, colour, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital or familial status. It is asked that all roles - players, coaches, volunteers or other officials - respect this mandate whilst still attaining the expected qualities and performance of a professional in a high intensity position”
In practice it means that there are few Omegas who make it to the draft, and none who make it onto the ice. Aiden Young lives and breathes hockey, he refuses to let his NHL dreams be stolen from underneath him because of his presentation. The only wrench in the plan is one Luca Haas.

Unfortunately for Luca, he didn’t think he was ever going to meet someone in Ottawa. He was the victim of having a very particular type that not many guys could live up to. He was desperately attracted to closeted, cocky, athletic fuckboys. Especially star athletes. He wanted a man that knew what he wanted, could chirp with the best, and could throw him around like a ragdoll. There was probably some pathology there about spending so much time in sports around toxic masculinity during puberty, but he did not want to analyze that any farther.
But as he hated to admit, Chloe was right. He deserved to not feel lonely, and with a little bit of effort, he could probably find someone to sleep with regularly. It might not be in Ottawa, but he was in 31 other cities throughout the season. A ton of guys in the league had regular hookups in various NHL markets. With the wine coursing through his system, Luca decided this was the perfect solution. He wasn’t ready to date seriously, but he could have some fun. It was time to build a roster.
