If Martin can have— everything he’s too goddamned terrified to want, and not selfless enough to stop wanting.
“Hurry back,” Martin tells him, and Jon smiles.
“I promise,” Jon replies, “I’ll be home as soon as I can.” He’s at the door again, but still lingering. “And you’ll—”
“—Text if I need anything,” Martin finishes, and Jon rolls his eyes, reaching for the door, faux-put-upon. “I will. I promise. Don’t worry too hard about me, Jon. I’m fine. It’s not like it’s the end of the world.”
Jon points at him, halfway out the door. “That’s still not funny.”
or: martin brings more back with him after the end of the end of everything than either he or jon bargained for. they still manage to figure it out together.

The Eye Knows and Sees all, but it cannot understand. That’s what the Archivist is for, to experience, understand, and archive terrible knowledge and fear, and filter that back to the Eye. If Jonah Magnus is the Pupil of the Eye, then Jonathan Sims is the brain that processes what the Eye and Pupil see, for the Beholding does not possess the neural pathways required to feel, let alone understand, fear. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask) that is about to change.
What happens when a knowledge-seeking entity that cannot think is directly linked to a (lonely, stubborn, morally strict, self-deprecating) human who thinks plenty enough for the both of them?
Or:
the Beholding gains sentience and promptly realizes: life is unfair and existence is pain, but at least it has its funky little Archivist.Jon, freshly woken from a six-month coma, gains a loyal, if annoying, companion during his lowest point.

And yet, any time he uses a logical explanation for anything Tim and Sasha giggle like schoolchildren while whispering about how much he’s “trying to keep up the act”
The worst part is that they’re right. It is an act. And with the worms getting ever closer to getting in the doors of the offices it’s getting harder to keep up the act; and that’s not even mentioning the radioactive spider experiments nextdoor.

Martin's life was... Okay. Not good, certainly not great, but he made it by.
But much to Martin's surprise, things... actually seemed to be improving. He was getting closer to his not-so-secret crush Jon, and a better life seemed just on the horizon for the pair. Hell, Martin might even finally get the nerve to confess his feelings.
So of course, life had to throw a fucking Zombie apocalypse right into his lap.

Summary
He falls in a multichrome void, eyes closed and Eye wide open, a sharp stab of color through a cornea surreal in being and in mind. There is pain that shines bitter white through his heart and as he feels the shifting colors bleed through him (dyed water through flower petals, a slice of a star shining in agony) he feels something shift, something tangible in this place where not even he is real. All at once, Jon dissolves and solidifies, and his eyes—real, physical, seeing eyes—open.
Jon wakes up and finds that nothing is as it should be. His coworkers--friends, here, apparently--are concerned over his strange scars and behavior. Not only that, but teaching a college-level class, dealing with new fears and avatars, and coping with the fact that his Martin isn't here... it's all a bit overwhelming. It's good he isn't on his own, even if the people he used to know are so different here.
