Meri, a young lemming, works aboard the Dauntless: an old, refurbished battleship stolen by the group of modern day pirates that the lemming works for, the Dreadnoughts. It is not the place she anticipated ending up, working alongside such an irascible crew, but it is a place. There is a justification for her existence.
One polar bear in a helicopter she gunned down that is brought in alive later, Meri begins to recognise the extent to which the Dreadnoughts will go to achieve wealth, and how this extent is infinitely further than her own. Now, the polar bear, Barnabas, may be her best chance of escape.
