Summary
Two key truths had remained constant for Jay McCarrol since his childhood: one, Matt was always there; and two, Jay had no real sense of direction in his life.
On the rare occasions in which he had allowed himself to reflect on it, Jay had always ended up reaching the same conclusion: a change in number one must be the key to changing number two.
After experiencing a timeline without Matt at his side and making the decision to go back to set things right, though, Jay realizes how much he values the life that they have together, and it finally occurs to him that maybe the purpose that he’s been searching for his whole life has been right there in front of him the entire time.
Or, Jay decides to propose to Matt.

Matt did well with instruction back then, not just dares and challenges. He was a surprisingly good student. Jay always copied off of him. But when they tossed their caps up on graduation day and no roadmap fell back down into their hands, both stagnated. Matt’s world stayed small, but it was all he needed. Now they were like two fleas running laps on the head of a pin, forever and a day, but would either of them really have it any other way?
Jay dissolves his miserable daydream with a shake of his head, longing to return to his work at the piano keys. But there’s Matt, on his knees, in seeming supplication for another command.

Angel looks up at him with those nightshade-lethal eyes, long hair askew like he's been running, flushed to the tip of his nose. The overhead lamp casts harsh shadows across his face. Aki watches him like one might some kind of feral cat, half drunk on anxiety and affection alike. His pulse is skittish. He can feel it hammering against the hollow of his throat.
"Are you afraid?" Angel whispers, resting his chin against Aki's thigh.
"No," Aki says.
"You look afraid."
"I want to kiss you," he admits.
Or, Aki loathes all devils. Perhaps he would loathe Angel too, if only he could see him as one.

Summary
Aki feels sick. He can’t stop. He tastes his own blood in Angel’s mouth, and beneath that the sickly sweetness of ice cream, and beneath that…something, something that draws him in, makes him deepen the kiss, licking into Angel’s mouth to get at that incredible taste. It takes much too long for the realization to hit him: that taste is Angel, just Angel, finally with no barriers between them.
Aki jolts away again, his breathing ragged. His body so badly wants to keep going, but he denies himself and steps back, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand. He stares at the mess left behind, his own blood indistinguishable from Angel’s. It makes him want to spill even more.
“What now?” Angel asks.
Aki looks at him and sees all the ways he could hurt Angel, all the places he could cut and claw and bite—yet, in the same moment, he sees the ways he could bring Angel bliss. Pain and pleasure, now impossibly intertwined.
“I have an idea,” Aki says.

He only registers what he's doing when he feels the warmth of Angel's lips through the thin paper. His eyes drop to Angel's. Trapped, he finishes cleaning the mess; leans back in his seat, scrunches the napkin, and drops it onto his plate.

Angel presses on. "Do you want to die?"
Of course he wants to die.
He wants to die just as much as he wants to live. Just as he is now devil and human, just as Angel is both beautiful and monstrous. Aki swallows the smoke and it kills him a little, just as it makes life a little more liveable in return. That's how it's been for most of his life.
"That's not what this is about," he says simply, unable to explain it.
Alive, Aki has survived by selling away his heart. Alive, Angel's memories have come back along with guilt. They find solace and understanding in the only person who sees them for what they are.

“Woah, woah,” Vox says. “Hold your horses. What—”
“This isn’t right.” The shadows around him swirl and turn darker and darker, sharpening into points. His eyes are shining red. “What did you do to me?”
“I didn’t do shit!” Vox sits up and crawls forward—Alastor presses himself back against the wall, ears flattened over his head. The hard turn from predator to scared-looking prey is making Vox’s head swim. “How is it my fault you’re rock hard?”
And he really is, Vox’s hindbrain notes. If anything, he seems to have gotten thicker—Vox can see the outline of him perfectly. Alastor curls in on himself when he notices Vox’s eyes.
“I don’t,” he starts, and then stops. That seems to be the end of the sentence.
“Well, you clearly are," Vox spits, frustrated. “I really don’t get the hassle here. I mean, we’ve been. Uh.” Together is a loaded word, but so is dating. Fraternizing? No, that sounds even more sordid. “Companionable. Right? This isn’t out of the, uh. Range of options.”

“I don’t trust him,” Alastor bites out, because it's true. It’s different. He doesn’t trust anyone, let alone Vox. All the man knows how to do is lie. “I just know him.”
There’s a soft, throaty chuckle as Valentino waves the smoke from his face to take a slow sip of his drink, closing his eyes briefly in pleasure before cracking one open to look at Alastor smugly. “Mm, and you also know that he wants to fuck you, don’t you, baby?” Discomfort crawls down Alastor’s spine, something ugly and hard settling in the pit of his stomach. “That cutesy, flirty shit you were pulling in front of the whole city—even your tits were falling out, which, nice touch by the way—yeah, you know him.”
Alastor has a plan. Then again, so does Valentino.

Summary
It seems like while Alastor was off preying on the self-destructive addictions of desperate sinners, Vox was off getting himself beaten half to death, probably from spouting belligerent nonsense at someone with violent tendencies and a far lower threshold for disrespect than Alastor. Not everyone finds poor Vox’s chatter as charming as he does.
If Vox is unconscious, then Vox is not being entertaining, and Alastor came here to have fun, not play nursemaid.
Or: Drunk on power and itching to cause some mayhem, Alastor hunts down the only person in the city who's always up for anything. Unfortunately, he finds Vox... not exactly in tip-top shape. No matter; he can work with that too.
