Summary
Another deep breath in, a slow breath out, and Ven squared his shoulders, opened his door and stepped into the dark room. Closed the door behind himself, flipped on the lights.
And then promptly screamed, slamming his head into the wooden door at his recoil, when he saw that there was someone already in the room and waiting for him.
Someone very, very familiar.
„Hey there, Ventus,“ Vanitas said – Vanitas!! – sitting on Ven's bed with his feet crossed under him and a smug grin on his face. „Stop screaming, I have a– I said stop screaming, I have a question.“

All Vanitas wanted to do was to ask Ventus a question about friendship after aquiring his own, very first friend. Then suddenly, he's betraying Xehanort, working with the Guardians, and also figuring out more about his relationship than he ever planned to. Whoops?

Summary
Void Gear had curled up next to him, as close as it could get to Vanitas while staying as far away from Ventus as possible. Its head pressed against Vanitas's thigh, practically presenting it for head-pets.
Vanitas gave the dragon a flat stare.
„I never should have started being nice to you,“ he said to it, matter of factly. „You were never this demanding before.“
Vanitas spends some time with Ventus and both of their dragons, and realizes how much better his life has become recently.

Summary
At the beginning, their revenge plan had been an easy, three-step thing.
Step one: Compile all the information they had about Master Xehanort's plans, and the general happenings of the future.
Step two: Figure out the best point in time in which to stop the bastard, and find out how to actually kill him based on that. Do that preferably before he could get too powerful, or shit really hit the fan.
Step three: Profit.
Considering how Vanitas's life had been going so far, he hadn't been particularly surprised when they already hit a roadblock on step one.
Vanitas and Meliora are finally reunited, ready to get down to business and get their revenge, prepared with knowledge from the future and pure, unadulterated spite. It should be easy. It very much is not.

„Vanitas,“ he said, his voice rough, and something in his heart twisted, sinking deeper into the cracks that had been left there by Kingdom Hearts.Brother. It sounded flat. Devoid of the sneer that had always been there when Vanitas had talked to Ven, before.
Sora loses in his final fight against Xehanort, and, devastated by this loss, the remaining Guardians can't withstand the power of Kingdom Hearts as they try to hold it back. They fall, just like Sora. All but one of them.
When Ven wakes up again after getting overwhelmed, there is suddenly a familiar voice in his head that tells him how they can save everyone. For a price.

Vanitas wheezed as he was bowled over, sliding another few steps before coming to a standstil with the dragon standing right above him, tail wagging back and forth, wings fluttering in delight, eyes glimmering as it sniffed his face, a red tongue darting out to lick over his cheeks.
It was the same as what Wayward Wind would have done. The same twitch of its head, the same way it nuzzled against his cheek. The same way it kept poking him, like demanding head scratches and pats.
Vanitas lay there limply, staring up at the dragon that was behaving like it loved him, the dragon that was not his own, and felt nothing but rage.
In a world where wielders are blessed with dragons instead of Keyblades, Vanitas grows up in the Graveyard, with Master Xehanort to train him and a dragon at his side that he doesn't want.
