“Yeah it was work work.” Matt replied with a smile. “I’m a defence lawyer.”
Peter had just taken another sip of water and choked at the admission, feeling it catch at the back of his throat.“You’re a defence lawyer? You?” He wheezed, cursing Matt's smug look as he coughed to dislodge the last dregs of liquid in his throat.
“Ironic isn’t it.” He said, an infuriatingly attractive smirk curling his lips.
Peter wiped his streaming eyes, willing the harried flush from his cheeks. Damn his easily blushing face. He knew Matt could probably feel the heat of it from miles away.
“You could say that.”
Matt picked up his own glass, casually swirling its contents as he leaned back in his seat, exuding an almost roguish charm that made his stomach whirl.
“What do you do then? We never touched on that either.”
“That's because we had an agreement of no personal details.” Peter retorted dryly. “I’m a biochemist. Got my PhD at ESU and now I work in a lab.”***

Summary
All told he got into a couple scraps a year, but nothing to write home about – he didn’t instigate, he didn’t go too far. He kept his head level and focused on what it needed to be focused on: winning the game. Sure, one time he almost punched Scott Hunter’s lights out after a game, but whatever – he was emotionally compromised then, sue him. Mostly everyone assumed that was a weird blip and let it go, and he and Scott maintained enough professional friendliness at league events that everyone figured it wasn’t personal, which it wasn’t.
All of that to say that the more and more the media went on about Hockey’s Golden Boy, the more people forgot that Shane was, at the end of the day, just like any other professional hockey player. He knew how to throw a fucking punch. He just chose not to, most times, for strategic reasons.
It became apparent that people had forgotten this very key fact almost immediately after he joined the Centaurs.
