Jason recognizes the kid on the news, he realizes, when he idly glances up from his book to the TV playing silently in front of him.
That’s not unusual, per say.
Kids from Crime Alley, from the Narrows? They make the news all the time, and he knows, or knew, a lot of ‘em. They’re always warnings, tragic and broken, and even if they don’t use the kids’ names, he can usually recognize the faces the headlines are paired with.
They aren't usually being labeled as "domestic terrorists" on national television, though. But maybe Percy Jackson's just always been an outlier. Jason remembers he was a pretty weird kid, from the very few times they met.

Outside of the Archipelago, Eret, son of Eret, is left with nothing after a mysterious dragon rider destroys his fort and releases the captured dragons his employer sorely needed. Fearing he’ll be killed if he doesn’t, he flees to the Archipelago with what little remains, hoping to find employment in the dragon-infested area. But the threat seems to have followed him, as news spreads of how Berk's infamous Phantom has returned to reclaim what's his. No one likes that dragons went extinct. No one likes that dodos are extinct either. Or passenger pigeons. Or Tasmanian Tigers. Or Wooly Mammoths or anything else further back.
But some people can’t drop it.
No one knows the exact date. It was pre-camera, the late seventeenth century is the best bet. Every year some crazy person claims to have seen a dragon in the woods, and inevitably it always ends up being a bear, or a rock, or a weird looking tree.
In the past 20 years, over 300 works of art having to do with dragons have been reported stolen. Some from private collections, some from museums. A lot of them paintings cut out of their frames with what appears to be a small knife. Skeletons, carved dragon-ivory knick knacks. Notably, a suit of medieval armor which appeared to be fireproofed with dragon scales.
All of it gone. None of it ever seen again.
