Will Graham sailed across the Atlantic after he recovered from the jagged slice in his belly. He saw the origami heart left in Palermo. He forgave Hannibal in the catacombs. He even went all the way out to Lithuania, to Lecter castle, in hopes of better understanding the elusive Dr. Lecter. But... he decided, then, that it was best for everyone if he and Hannibal never saw one another again.
He instead retired to a small cabin in Triple Oak, Montana, with only one neighbor. Duncan was gruff at first, but gradually they built a friendship and even more gradually they built something else. Will is happy. Safe. Things are stable.
But Hannibal Lecter cannot let him go that easily, and there are plenty out there who cannot let Hannibal go, either.

It is on the bus ride home from the BHSCI that Will realizes he wants to be done. Done with realizing Lector’s manipulations, done with having to look into Alana's guilt-tinged watery eyes, and done with Jack's bullish mentality.
Beyond the physical bars of the BHCI, the only thing keeping him caged was those around him. Before Jack Crawford darkened his classroom, he had been fine. He had problems, sure, but he had been okay. Will knew the shape of the creature inside him; he didn't need anyone else's misinformed perceptions of him to cloud his thoughts.
Aka, Will leaves and takes care of himself, Hannibal be damned.
Hannibal realizes he's misstepped and begins trying to fix it —a case of too-little, too-late—that drags him on a cross-country road trip.

Summary
Hannibal abandons Will, leaves him with a smile and disappears. As soon as Will wakes up in the hospital he starts coughing up rose petals. He hides and it only gets worse until he's coughing up buds and thorns. Roses are growing in his chest and he is slowly dying. The surgery that will save him will also cause him to forget Hannibal. Will is more than okay with that. Hannibal is not. How could Will even think of cutting him out?

The elk tracks stop at a quiet intersection between the trees, where the traffic lights blink red for no one. After a quick look around, Will follows along the side of the road. He bats the snowflakes out of his eyelashes. Where Will is walking is beyond him. He doesn't know. Doesn't care.
"Perhaps it might be therapeutic for you, Will." Hannibal had murmured to him. "Would you let me try?"
S1 fic where Will, bordering on a full mental breakdown, tries to sabotage the last functional relationship in his life with his therapist Hannibal. Will expresses a desire to run away and have someone care about him enough to run after him. Hannibal decides to make his fantasy real with some very unconventional therapy, and in their chase, Will realizes some important things about himself and Hannibal. The second and eventual third chapter follow up on the two post-fall with Will's depression in full swing.
