Summary
Mike Wheeler has spent the last four years of college wandering aimlessly through life. He'd followed Will to California, only for Will Byers, his best, most trusted friend, to slowly phase himself out of his life. And frankly, he'd seemed happier without Mike. What was he supposed to make of that?
But then, Mike discovers some things about himself. He starts to find the pieces that he was looking for. And... what is Will supposed to do with that?
(aka: a post-canon "mike finds his way back to will eventually" 90s college fic, in which will byers gets to scream at mike a lil like he deserves, and mike gets to prove himself in return)

It's Michael Wheeler's first day of sophomore year at Hawkins High, and he's completely, terrifyingly alone. El has broken up with him, and he hasn't seen his friends all summer. His world is crumbling around him, and he doesn't care enough to stop it.
Until his English teacher sets an assignment to write a retelling of Romeo and Juliet - and his project partner is his ex-best friend, William Byers, the boy his world once revolved around.or,
Mike Wheeler and Will Byers write a self-insert superhero comic book together about doomed, forbidden lovers and realise that they are also doomed, forbidden lovers.

Summary
Mike and Will are not completely new to intimacy. They show each other affection constantly. Be it holding hands, bumping knees, kissing, compliments, pet names, leaving hickeys.
But that's where it stops.
They've talked about sex, discussed their feelings on it, agreed that they want to do it together, whenever they're both ready for it. And for a while, that was it.
It never came up again, and they both felt content with it. Maybe it'll come naturally, work out, like things usually do with the two of them.
Only lately something has shifted. Neither of them is sure when and how it happened, but things have started to heat up.

By all accounts, though, this should have worked. William had pored over countless volumes from the royal Library, and, when all other remedies failed, had ventured deeper, darker. Surely there would be some ancient magic strong enough to break Sir Michael from his trance.
A dangerous spell goes awry. Sir Michael vanishes off the face of the earth, and a disgruntled teenager takes his place. Worlds away, Will Byers discovers a wrench has been thrown in his plan to have a great summer.

“I’m okay, Mike. Don’t worry.”
Pressing his lips together, Mike nodded. “See you at lunch?”
“Sure.”
Will looked down at Mike’s hand, still wrapped around his wrist. He forced his heart to slow down.
“Oh,” Mike said, dropping his wrist as if he’d been burned. “Sorry.”
He turned around and hurried down the hallway, almost knocking into people walking in the opposite direction.

Or, the world is ending, and Will has noticed that Mike has been acting weird lately. He spends more time with him, sits closer to him, touches him more often. He’s also unusually protective, and Will can’t put his finger on why, because Mike is straight and dating his sister.
