Summary
I thought it would be really funny if, instead of finding out about Merlin's magic and having one episode to react, Arthur instead spent a whole season being an absolute prat about the whole thing. Here are some things I've imagined from this scenario, set in that magical period between Season 3 and 4 when the knights of the round table were running around being chaotic dumbasses and stealing chickens.
"Merlin," yelped Arthur, outraged and relieved in equal measure. "What on earth are you- Is this what you meant by powerful, ancient magic? You can make your eyes go sparkly and then fix people's clothing?"
Merlin stopped short and rubbed the back of his own neck awkwardly. "Among other things, yes."
"And you've been moping around all day about this?"
"You didn't believe me! I was baring my soul to you and you were so arrogant that you just-"
"You told me that you'd saved my life a hundred times with the mystical power of your warlock skills," said Arthur, wiggling his fingers as though casting a spell. "Not that you were hiding the ability to dress me more efficiently."

Merlin ducks forward, grabbing Arthur’s hands. His are cool and soft, and Arthur is surprised by the feel of Merlin’s palm over his own rough knuckles. “Arthur,” he says pointedly. “I know my duty, and I don’t need you to remind me. Are you always like this?”
“Like what?”
“Annoying,” Merlin says, and leans back, appraising him more thoughtfully than his tone suggests. “So concerned with your honour.”
Or: Arthur must marry Lord Emrys for a year to create an alliance between their people. Except it isn't Emrys who comes to marry him, but the young druid Merlin, who soon turns all of Camelot upside down—and Arthur with it.

There’ll always be people coming before him, and he’s made peace with that long ago – but if even Agravaine can come before him, then anyone could, no? Anyone could replace him. But all Leon sees is blue. “Thank you, Merlin,” he mutters.

Summary

Galiad fell to his knees, ears ringing. He never should have tried to kill the King. It had been a stupid, reckless decision, and he could not believe he’d been so easily bribed into it.
He had let his ego get the better of him, and now, here he was, on his knees in the throne room, fighting back tears, trying not to throw up all over the stone floor, begging for his life to be spared.
And here’s the real kicker; he wasn’t even on trial for the attempted murder of his King. His Majesty didn’t know about that.
No, Galiad was on trial for the crime he’d committed against King Arthur’s manservant.

'Which is?' Arthur demanded, raising his eyebrows.
Gaius sighed, casting a tired, apologetic look in Merlin's direction. 'If the target of a love spell is already truly, deeply devoted to someone – if they love another without question or pause – then no spell can take hold.'
'You're saying that it didn't work because Merlin already loves someone?' The words felt thin between his lips, straining to get past the sudden, leaden feeling in his chest. It felt like someone had plunged their hand inside him and caught his heart in the cage of their fist, and Arthur was left breathless as he tried to speak around the awful sensation.

When a love potion fails to affect Merlin because his heart has already been claimed, Arthur is left wondering who has earned Merlin's devotion

In pursuit of a sorcerer, Arthur and his knights stumbled into a cave. As the ceiling collapsed on them, Merlin had no choice except to reveal his magic or let all his friends die. That choice was not a choice at all.
As Merlin's magic began to run out and tensions with the knights run high, it seemed he might have made the wrong choice after all.

“Merlin,” Arthur asks, tilting his head curiously as he soaks in the tub, finger absently caressing the mark painted onto his skin where his shoulder and neck meet. “Why do you never show your soulmark?”
Merlin doesn’t look at him when he answers, just focuses on plucking dirty tunics from the floor. “You don’t show your soulmark either, sire.”
Arthur huffs. “That’s not the same. I can’t. But if I weren’t the prince of Camelot, I would be showing it off everywhere. Most people do. Aren’t you worried you won’t find your soulmate?”

Arthur has always been proud of his soulmark, has always known that when his forever came along they would be remarkable. Merlin has kept himself so modestly covered since arriving in Camelot that Arthur can't help but be curious about the mark he must be hiding... until Merlin tells him that he's Unmarked.
But then Merlin becomes injured and unconscious, torn cloth at his neck, and Arthur pulls it aside to view the wound--and finds his matching soulmark instead.
