Between the Cailleach—who watched him silently—and the swirling darkness of the rend in the fabric of the world, sat a squat circle of stones, built up into a small wall. A well. Either Merlin had not noticed it before or, more likely, it had materialised before him without his notice. He could feel how alive this place was with magic, though none of it felt quite right at the gateway that should never have been. The hairs on the back of his neck raised, as if something had breathed down it, and Merlin shivered.
It was now or never.
Merlin perched himself on the edge of the wall, swinging his legs round until they dangled into nothingness. With one final glance at the men who still argued, each one of them dear to him, he caught Arthur’s eyes at last. Merlin’s heart sank in his chest, as he watched Arthur’s jaw drop.
Merlin does what he must to pay the Cailleach's toll. Arthur is with him, even at the bottom of a well.

“Sire?” Merlin stutters, but when Arthur beckons him closer, he gets up and slowly walks forward. He looks a little cautious, but sweetly clueless, apparently not realising that it’s him who Arthur is going to kiss and not one of his knights. Merlin, of course, decides to tag along, even though he doesn’t know what they’re doing.
In the blink of an eye, all gets turned upside down, and Arthur is straight up not having a good time. Merlin is suddenly fluent in the Old Tongue and the prince accidentally poisoned himself!

“Merlin,” Arthur asks, tilting his head curiously as he soaks in the tub, finger absently caressing the mark painted onto his skin where his shoulder and neck meet. “Why do you never show your soulmark?”
Merlin doesn’t look at him when he answers, just focuses on plucking dirty tunics from the floor. “You don’t show your soulmark either, sire.”
Arthur huffs. “That’s not the same. I can’t. But if I weren’t the prince of Camelot, I would be showing it off everywhere. Most people do. Aren’t you worried you won’t find your soulmate?”

Arthur has always been proud of his soulmark, has always known that when his forever came along they would be remarkable. Merlin has kept himself so modestly covered since arriving in Camelot that Arthur can't help but be curious about the mark he must be hiding... until Merlin tells him that he's Unmarked.
But then Merlin becomes injured and unconscious, torn cloth at his neck, and Arthur pulls it aside to view the wound--and finds his matching soulmark instead.

Summary
Merlin is cursed to be able to read other people's minds. While this ability is useful for saving Arthur's life from visiting nobility and guests, where it really isn't useful is in his personal life. He really didn't want or need to know about Leon's dream of becoming a hermit in the woods, or Morgana's petty revenge schemes, and he especially didn't need to know about the bad poetry Arthur mentally composed about his arse. But when you're secretly cursed to read minds, it's difficult to complain.
