Merlin was technically banished, but everybody knew he wasn’t really gone. Sometimes, the cooks would leave out spare food only to find their shelves fully restocked the next day. Gwaine would leave out plans to prank the other knights and they would be carried out within the hour. Arthur would turn a blind eye to the way familiar blue eyes twinkled at him from underneath the hood of a cloak, or ignore the whispers that said the stocks were haunted.

Summary
Arthur startles awake, but the pair in the middle of the clearing are too busy with each other to pay him any heed, which gives Arthur a chance to take in the strange situation unfolding before him.
Promptly, Arthur decides he’s dead. He must be dead. There are no other rational explanations for what is happening. None. He’s got to be dead.
Because Merlin is yelling at a bloody dragon.
--- A rewrite of The Last Dragonlord, wherein Arthur knows about the magic, Merlin doesn't know that Arthur knows about the magic, and Arthur still just assumes Merlin is a crappy sorcerer even after he defeats the Great Dragon.
