Ilya's brain stuttered. For a few seconds, the word simply refused to translate, because Shane could not possibly be saying what it sounded like he was saying.
"You are a ...." Ilya realized he did not know the English word, apart from the slurs he had heard thrown around in locker rooms and on the ice. Come to that, he was not sure he knew a Russian word for it that was not also half a slur.
"A carrier, yeah," said Shane.
"You did not know?"
Shane did not speak for a moment. His eyes were open now, but he still would not look at Ilya. He instead glared at a distant point on the blank hospital wall as if he were trying to decide how much to tell him.
"I never got tested when I was a kid," he said finally. "Mom didn't want it in my medical file, if I was. She didn't want another thing people could hold against me. An excuse to -- fuck. They're never gonna let me play hockey again, are they?"
