“We want the same things,” Emilié said lightly, slowly making another twist in Nathalie’s hair. She combed out the knots at the end, taking her time as she considered the rest of her answer. Nathalie stared, watching her thoughts work inscrutably across her marble face, like the passing sun through a museum’s skylights. “We’ll go the same way.”
Nathalie raised an eyebrow, took a drag. “Go?” she asked.
Emilié leaned back, crossing her fingers playfully, her eyes reflecting that cruel light of the moon. “‘Til death do us part.”
She had her wedding ring on, sometimes. The nights always seemed to blur.

“Adrien,” she said.
“I’m real drunk right now,” he said up at the sky, and she laughed. He smiled a little bit, and then he looked down at her, and her breath caught in her throat. He was still smiling, but it was the sort of smile that priests had at funerals, grieved and holy. “So I’m going to ask. What if we just did it?”
She didn’t even have to ask.
“What if- what if we just did it? I mean, can we not?” he asked her, his shoulders drawing up, his posture sloping towards her, bending to her like he was begging. “I think- I think after everything we’ve done, after how it feels to be with you- I think maybe we should. Can we?”
It’s not like this hadn’t come up before, it was just that this was the first time he was so honest about it, the first time he looked her in the eyes and seemed like he wanted a real answer.
And from the way his face was falling, he was getting it. She hadn’t even opened her mouth.
