He exhales a shaky breath and then checks his watch; the train is running late, and the later it gets, the more the anxiety builds at the base of Patrick’s spine. The more his brain whispers this is a bad idea, asks is this really something you’re ready to know? He tries to distract himself by observing the myriad of other people waiting—an older, heavy-set couple wearing matching t-shirts, a large group of loud teenagers with seriously abrasive accents, a distinctly European trio of men arguing in what sounds like German. He assumes they’re mostly tourists; he is, after all, staying near Times Square, and he’s pretty sure any self-respecting New Yorker avoids this particular station at all costs. It’s not like he was dying to eat at a New York City TGI Friday’s himself, but the hotels really did seem to be the best bang for his buck.
The distant whir of the oncoming train sparks him out of contemplating subpar American food, and he swallows, mouth dry, feeling more like a man on his way to a sentencing hearing than a college graduate on a solo vacation, going to a bar for a drink.
It’s just a bar. It’s just a drink.

Summary
Patrick adjusts his watch for probably the fifteenth time since Twyla sat him in the booth. It’s 8:07. He can’t pretend to be surprised that David is late, whereas punctuality was hammered into Patrick’s head so consistently by his parents from such a young age that it’s basically part of his DNA now. It was always going to be this way—Patrick was always going to be early, and David was always going to be late. It’s who they are, and somehow that realization reassures him. That, at the very least, he knows David that way.

Patrick watches him and waits to hear the bathroom door shut before following, legs still a little numb. He grabs another towel from the linen closet and then, once in his room, spreads it on the bed, laying the jacket carefully on top of it and flipping on his ceiling fan, using the pull cord to turn it to its highest setting. Then he steps back from the bed as it picks up speed, leaning against his dresser and scrubbing his hands over his face; there’s an eighty percent chance that he humiliates himself completely before this is all over.

Follow up to Fitful Dreams of Some Greater Awakening
“I love that part!” she shrieks, laughing as she burrows against David in delighted fear, looking vaguely like a bush baby.
“You’re a sociopath.” David shakes his head, but he’s smiling as she piles a bit closer, pulling her legs up and angling herself towards David’s body. David’s other hand finds her small bare knee and holds it reassuringly, his dark eyes full and warm. Patrick’s gaze lingers on David’s hand where it squeezes Stevie’s knee, enveloping it easily with his large palm and long fingers, olive against her pale, smooth skin. Stevie has her hands tucked between her thighs, pulled into the sleeves of the sweatshirt she borrowed from Patrick and Patrick’s mouth is dry. He tries to focus back on the movie but there’s something foreign curling up in his chest that he can’t quite feel the edges of, and it has his heart racing.
Our favorite trio explores the merits of redrawing the boundaries of their relationship.
