But the goal was never to settle down in a village on the other side of the world. El didn’t want three waterfalls. She wanted to be home, cuddled up on the couch, watching Miami Vice with her dad.

“Shit, Joel,” Tess drawled, accepting a glass of wine from Frank as they all watched Bill dig a hole in the yard. “I see where you get it from.”
“Okay, ’m not as bad as him,” he argued. Tess hummed noncommittally.
Before Joel could respond, Frank grinned and said, “Like father, like son?”
“Funny,” he deadpanned. Then, he turned and called to Bill, “You have nail bombs and an electric fence, Dad. No one’s breakin’ in. And if they did, I don’t think they’d be fussin’ with a spare key.”
“Well, I voted against having a spare key at all, but-”
“I maintain that your son should have a key to your house,” Frank cried, though he was still staring at Bill with that big goofy grin Joel hadn’t seen on anyone in twenty years.
Bill made a big show of dropping the key in the hole and filling it back in. “Then he’ll have to work for it.”
