If you can’t tell I’ve been re-reading the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker and so this happened... Anyway.....
Remus and Sirius met for the first time in the early days of the First World War and were lovers throughout their time in the trenches. Remus is an ambulance driver, seeing the aftermath of the carnage each day, while Sirius is an officer responsible for sending men (if you could call them that) to their death in No Man's Land. They find brief solace with each other but can never truly get close to each other. When Remus was injured and permanently disabled he broke off their relationship. Sirius, still struggling with shell shock after over a decade, had thought Remus had died years ago of his wounds. But when they meet unexpectedly fifteen years after the end of the war old feelings rekindle themselves despite changed bodies and minds.

Remus’s world has been silent ever since he’d lost his hearing in an accident at age five. Life might be easier if anyone around him could sign, but in the small village he was stuck in, even his father had never made an effort to learn. So, Remus lived in quiet isolation, caring for a man who could barely communicate with, an a head full of thoughts he can never fully share.
Then a reckless driver nearly runs him off the road, and suddenly, that same stranger keeps showing up in Remus's dull life everywhere he looked. He’s frustratingly attractive, unexpectedly kind, and, to Remus’s surprise, even starts learning sign language. It feels like someone is finally listening.

Lycanthropy research still wasn’t extensive, and despite major advancements in recent years, little was known about its long-term effects. But one thing was for certain: There was no cure for it.
In spite of the obvious signs that Remus’ lycanthropy was continuing to make life difficult for him as he got older, he and Sirius have made their life together work and were happy living it. But sometimes reality was difficult to face, especially when it hit like a brick.

Their bubbling discontent had been directly correlated with the fact that, after years of quiet office research and paper pushing with Hermione, Remus wanted to be back in the field. Restless and haunted, frustrated with the molasses crawl of government initiatives, Remus had wanted to do more. Wanted to prove he still could.
Sirius, quietly content with their happy little life, wanted him to do significantly less.
