Two years post-Dungeon, everyone is moving on. Nobody wants to be around Carl's shit. He doesn't want to talk about it much either, really. But when your childhood is a black hole of misery, and your time in the alien torture dungeon is too, what's left? Is he just an ugly, miserable person? A disgusting creature full of pain and shame? A collection of broken coping mechanisms, nightmares, and hypervigilance?
Well, he knows one asshole who's perverted enough to want him around no matter what state he's in. At least, he used to, but he hasn't heard from him in a few weeks.
"The thing you don't understand, Carl, is I'm not just like your weird friend who can't stop talking about how they watched someone die on LiveLeak. I've consumed brutality on a scale most entities can't even comprehend millions of times over. Your friends see what you've done and what happened to you as not a part of the 'true' you. Summary
When Carl, desperate for a job and a place to live upon turning 18, takes a job in an elite hunter/jumper barn, he has no idea what he's walking into. The world of expensive horses and high-stakes competition isn't something he'd ever known existed, but it sucks him in regardless. The longer he stays, the more entangled he gets with the horses, the clients, and his boss, and the harder it is to get out. As opportunities present themselves, though, he's not sure he'd want to leave anyway.
