Summary
His parents should have moved.
They should have twisted in the air, shifted their weight, caught themselves. Dick has seen them survive worse falls in rehearsal, laughing as they landed in impossible ways. He’s seen bruises fade in minutes. Bones knit themselves back together between breaths.
But they don’t.
Instead, his mother’s hand spasms mid-reach, fingers locking unnaturally. His father’s body jerks, like he’s hit with something invisible— like the air itself has turned solid around him.
Foxfire should have bloomed.
It doesn't.
A curse, Dick would later learn, woven into the air itself— one that starved their fire before it could even bloom.
No flash of gold. No tails. No magic rushing in to undo the damage. Just the sound— too loud, too final— of bodies breaking the same way human bodies break.
