Chapter Text
"Oh Captain Kaeya, i've been looking for you."
Of course you were. Kaeya thought, fake smile plastered across his face, keeping up the act until he could finally escape from another menial conversation.
“Kaeya perfect timing Jean needs these papers in her office asap, can you handle that for me darling?”
“Anything for you Lisa.” He joked with a friendly wink, although internally he growled and gritted his teeth.
Nearly free. He repeated that thought to himself as he traipsed down the hall to the acting grandmaster’s office arms laden with papers. Trust Lisa to shift all of the tasks she found boring onto Kaeya, who she knew found them equally as boring. Archons he just wanted this day to end already. But it would be just his luck if the ever hardworking Jean had yet another task for him to fulfil before he could finally leave. Bracing himself he knocked on the door only entering when a voice from inside gave him permission to.
“Paper delivery from the latest victim of Lisa’s laziness,” Kaeya sang as he placed the files in front of the acting grandmaster, who was still engaged in her work.
Jean looked up from her desk, “Oh Kaeya,” she sighed in relief. “I was supposed to get these papers from Lisa hours ago.”
“Well you know how she gets when she finds something interesting to research,” He remarked, leaning against the wall casually.
Jean chuckled affectionately, “Yes, yes I do.” She shook herself out of her thoughts. “Sorry Kaeya, thank you for the files, you may leave now if that was all.”
“No problem at all, acting grandmaster” Kaeya replied with a playful bow, “I haven’t seen you in a while, so it was the perfect opportunity to have a fun little chat.” He opened the door and left with a parting wave to Jean.
As soon as the door closed behind the calvary captain Jean reached for the papers he had delivered. Her face quirked a little in confusion as she noticed the papers were a little crumpled, as though someone had clenched their fists whilst carrying them. Did Kaeya do that? She wondered. He had been a little on edge lately, but when she tried to ask him about it he claimed he was just getting over an illness. Jean sighed, I’ll ask Klee to pop round with some fisherman’s toast for them sometime soon. The nonchalant knight did seem to have a bit of a soft spot for her after all.
The door clicked shut behind Kaeya and he leaned against it for a few seconds. I’m finally done with work for the day. Not a moment too soon. He thought as he pushed off the door and headed towards the entrance. Any longer and he probably would have-
An excitable voice startled the knight out of his thoughts, “Big brother Kaeya!”
Kaeya turned around just in time to register the small red blur that launched herself at him, but failed to stop his instinctive flinch at the unexpected physical touch. It wasn’t that Kaeya had a problem with physical touch as such, he was just… unused to it. Kaeya preferred to keep most people at arms length , and his father had not been the most affectionate person in the world- Kaeya shook himself out of his thoughts. Enough. He told himself as he focused on Klee’s slightly concerned face instead.
“Are you okay? Did Klee hurt you by mistake?” The small pyro wielder fretted.
Kaeya gave a small smile and knelt down to Klee’s level. “Don’t you worry little spark knight,” he comforted, gently patting Klee on the head as he did. “I’m just not feeling too well today is all.”
“Oh.” Klee seemed to ponder this for a second before announcing, “Do you want to come fish blasting with me? That always makes me feel better!” She jumped a little as another idea came to her, “Big brother Albedo tells me all about his experiments when I’m feeling poorly. I don’t know much about experimenting but I can tell you stories about my adventures with Dodoco and my other friends?”
“That’s very nice of you.” Kaeya chuckled softly, “but I have to pass on your generous offer today as there is somewhere else I have to be.” He stood up and stretched his arms casually, yawning a little as he turned to leave. “Maybe another time?”
Klee nodded and watched Kaeya as he left the knights of Favonius headquarters. He looked a little tired. He looked tired a lot recently. Sad too. She didn’t like it when people she cared about were sad. What should Klee do? She wondered. Big brother Albedo always helped her when she was feeling sad or didn’t know what to do. That’s it! She would ask Big brother Albedo for help, he cares a lot about Kaeya and would know what to do.
And with her plan of action firmly decided, Klee went to go find her big brother
