But now — he couldn't stop thinking about their haunting encounter in the kitchen, the way the gambler's eyes had glowed in the dark, the wild laughter —
He needed to understand.
Or, Ratio gets a better glimpse at Aventurine's trauma and does the very logical thing of cultivating empathy through extensive research.

Aventurine doesn't understand half of those words, but it doesn't matter. The gun speaks clearly enough.
Kakavasha's riskiest gamble pays off, and he is hired by the Interastral Peace Corporation as Aventurine. A second chance at life, if he can survive it.
Without a Synesthesia Beacon, every conversation is a puzzle, a bluff. The new Stoneheart has learned to fake fluency in the IPC's language, Universalis, the same way he learned everything else: through observation and context, by slipping through the cracks with charm and deception.
That is, until Dr. Ratio cares enough to scrutinize him, and refuses to look away.

"Of course not," Veritas scoffs.In the aftermath of the Intelligentsia Guild and IPC's fumble in Egyhazo, a new Stoneheart rises to prominence. Veritas hesitates to believe that this "Aventurine" intends to make good on his promise of 'mutually beneficial collaboration.'

Summary
Veritas hadn't even tried to stop Aventurine from pulling him in by the chain at his chest and kissing him hard and biting. That had been his first lapse in judgment. The second came soon after, then the third, fourth, fifth.
Sex creates idiots. Veritas knows this well. He wishes he knew how to stop himself. He doesn't want to stop at all. Aventurine is far too good at pushing his buttons. Making him stupid. Making him care. They meet again in less than a week.
