Fabian's eyes jolt back to the goblin knight’s. “I don’t— What do you— Why don’t you have a name?” He feels himself getting tied up in the strangeness of the circumstances once more. “How can someone not have a name?”
“I’m not someone. I’m your knight.” He shrugs. “What would I need a name for?”
“You’re not someone? You’re not a person?” Fabian’s mouth returns to its fly-catching position, wide and gaping. “What does that mean?”
“I’m just yours.” The knight shrugs again. Fabian ignores the way that his words clench around his heart with an uncomfortable, unwelcome pressure. “I just serve.”

Summary
Ulchtar is an aerospace engineer working under MECHA, the world's largest anti-alien defense corporation. (If you asked him, he'd even say he's their *finest* aerospace engineer.) He's led their space program since its inception. But his career takes a nosedive after Jazz, one of their best mech pilots, vanishes during MECHA's very first space mission, and his boss decides his talents are no longer necessary.
If he's going to survive, he'll need a lot of help. And if that help comes in the form of a giant robot from space that predates human civilization, who the hell is he to complain?

With the Quintesson threat looming, they can't take any chances. If only the AI would quit going so rogue.AKA the one where Jazz just can't stay dead, Swindle is haunted by (literal) ghosts, and nobody is making the healthy choice.
