Regulus doesn't protest. Nothing about James’ statement is untrue—he loves Effie and Monty with his whole heart. And he’s losing them too. They’re a package deal, James being their beloved and only child.
He didn’t think he could resent James more after what had happened, but seeing that cream envelope this morning made his heart twist and shrivel, brimming with virulent and suffocating hate.
There is a thin line between love and hate. It had always rung true for Regulus, considering his family’s disposition, but it proves to be exceptionally fitting these days.
