“What then?” Roy teases. “Don’t tell me you called her the second you got home.”
“Nah.” He shakes his head. “Prick Jamie, remember? I saw some shitty advice on Reddit and didn’t text Keeley for a week.”
There’s a beat of silence while Roy takes in the sincerity of Jamie’s words, and then his composure cracks, hairline fractures along the edges before the whole thing bursts open. He starts laughing like Ernie from fucking Sesame Street, because it’s something so painfully Jamie, and he realizes, not for the first time, how glad he is to have the muppet in his life. Stupid, self-centred, arrogant Jamie, but also hardworking, thoughtful, and kind. It’s scary. To imagine how easily things could have turned out differently, and yet, how inevitable.
It’s strikingly clear now that, from the very beginning, Jamie was always meant to be Roy’s best friend.
Jamie would argue he was meant to be more.

Jamie Tartt was driving Roy insane, and he hadn’t even seen the man in weeks. To be fair, he was going plenty insane without Jamie’s influence, but it definitely didn’t help.
And Jamie was fucking brilliant on the pitch. Right foot kissed by god and the instincts of a killer. His goal against Liverpool still made a regular appearance in Roy’s dreams. He could go so fucking far, and he was getting fired over stupid shit like this? What the hell was he thinking?
It was only after cleaning the entire kitchen and a sink full of dishes that Roy remembered. He had left football behind him, and he did not care at all about Jamie Tartt.
