Summary
Shikamaru’s never felt chakra so vibrant and warm before.
The log that Naruto’s been punching shatters clean apart, reduced to little more than splinters under the devastating force of his chakra enhanced blow.
Shocked and more than a bit startled, Shikamaru wheezes loudly, the sound carrying across the clearing and causing Naruto to abruptly turn and look in his direction.
And in that single moment Shikamaru is lost.

Kakashi hadn't meant to throw them back in time, but Naruto had been dying and that wasn't something he'd been able to accept lying down. A world without Naruto in it didn't sound like much of a world at all, and all it takes is a flare of his Mangekyou to send them flying through a portal to the past. Tossed into a distant timeline, they suddenly find themselves with a new chance to save not just everyone, but themselves too. And if Kakashi gets to harass his younger self along the way and discover what it feels like to love someone... well, that's just the cherry on top
(OR: Kakashi and Naruto are flung into the past, the opportunity to stop and take a breather makes them realize their feelings for one another may run a little deeper than they initially though, and wow, was Kurama always this fucking annoying?)

“This is such a drag,” Shikamaru complained.
Ino hid her smile and cocked her head to the side and said faux thoughtfully, “It’s either this or we keep doing D-rank missions. Do we really want to continue catching that damn cat and cleaning farm equipment?”
Shikamaru winced and admitted, “You have a point.”
Naruto shouted in victory and ran in small circles, “Yes, yes, yes! Chunin exams, here we come!”Series
