Summary
Gustave Écrivain is a Head Mechanic of the Jaeger program, creator of the Painted series of Jaegers, and a former Jaeger pilot cadet.
Verso Dessendre is one of the pilots of Painted Cypher, one of the fastest and most lethal Jaegers in the world, and currently without a co-pilot.

Compared to losing his arm and then losing Sophie, reading a song Verso Dessendre had clearly written about being in love with someone else shouldn’t even register. To Gustave’s hopeless heart it was cataclysmic.
Or: Gustave's side of "Heartsong." When Verso gives Gustave a new song to sing just ahead of the final leg of their American tour, Gustave has to reconcile himself to the fact that he's singing the lyrics of "Mon Cœur" to some faceless person who's captured his lead guitarist's heart.
