Her mouth moves and words must come out but he can't hear it over the blood rushing in his ears. A laugh bubbles up and out of his throat. "Nancy, that isn't— don't mess with me, okay? I'm sorry you had to—"
She takes another step, to the side this time. Closer to Meg and Claudette. Further from Steve. There's pity in her eyes— he's seen it enough to know what pity looks like from her— but nothing else. No recognition. Like she doesn't know him.

Something pulled and her keys went flying out of her hands. They landed on the floor with a sharp clang of metal against wood. Swallowing, Nancy curled her fingers. Maybe she shouldn't have said anything. She was just so tired; all the little things—their keys on the ground, doors slamming shut, the television or lights turning on and off randomly. They were wearing on her.
