Deep in the private medical wing of Vought Tower, James “Badger” Harris lies in a healing coma. The left hemisphere of his brain is scarred and slowly healing. The doctors call it “deep restorative sleep.”
However, behind the walls of his eyelids, the coma cracked open. The present fades. Suddenly he is no longer a man in a hospital bed. He is there, reliving every brutal chapter of his impossible long life in vivid, merciless color. The memories don’t come in order. They crash over him like waves, raw and unfiltered, as if his mind is forcing him to remember who he was before the events that hospitalized him.
This is the story of his life playing behind his closed eyes, because if he wants to wake up, he needs to face some buried demons, to archive....

Except she panics. And overshares. And accidentally says something about how lonely he must be, looking down at everyone, never having anyone who can just stand next to him.

Noir wonders if all of this is really, truly worth it. It seems to be a recurring thought throughout his life.
He remembers thinking it at nine years old after snapping Lewis Frankel's neck. He remembers thinking it after Soldier Boy took his role from him. He remembers thinking it as his skull was smashed in by the same man who had taken everything from him.
Now, here he is, forty years later. Despite being broken and lost, one part that has managed to cling onto whatever husk was left of him was the whispering doubt, murmuring a small, ‘Was stopping him worth it?’ He shoves the thought down like every other time.
Besides, he doubts the whole ordeal with Starlight and The Deep will affect anything. It was just one awkward moment he stumbled into by accident. How much could that possibly change for him?
