The spirits of the place - root, leaf, cloud, river, stone - spoke to them. And they could speak back, even command to a gentle extent. Gen’s grandmother could coax stubborn plants into flourishing, call a storm’s attention until it gathered overhead, or listen to the wind mutter news from distant hills. She said every human had a connection to the earth’s spirit, but most were deaf to it. Gen and his grandmother, though - theirs ran deep. Deeper than reason, deeper than blood.

Summary
There’s something addictive about how unfiltered Ryusui is. Something dangerous, too. Ukyo is used to reading silence, to finding meaning in what’s not said. But Ryusui doesn’t do silence. He shouts his feelings to the world, and sometimes, Ukyo doesn’t know how to respond. Sometimes, it feels like standing too close to the sun, brilliant and burning and impossible to look away from.

They live in sheltered cities, far away from any actual dungeons, and the closest they’ve come to seeing a real monster is in an Elven-made VR game. They’ve never died from a basilisk’s fangs in their throat.
But this guy seems different.
Kabru taps over to the comment section of the video. Normally he avoids them, but this might actually be relevant to his research.

Yo grins, visibly thrilled that he’s managed to pique Ryusui’s interest. “He was one of Tsukasa’s foremost lieutenants,” he says gleefully, “but he went behind Tsukasa’s back and made a deal with Senku and Gen. He even let Chrome go when he was a prisoner of war, the bastard. Lied with a smile, too. You can’t trust someone like that - you never know what they’re thinking. Push comes to shove, Ukyo’ll put himself first.”

Chrome, Senku, and Gen are all pretty easy for Ryusui to figure out. Ukyo, though, is another story.

He returned to his team as Teikoku started their warm-up. If one could even call it that. Shot after shot rained into the dirt, whipping away dust as they hit the ground with unbearable force. Passes were traded that were so technically impossible, he couldn't seem to trust his eyes. Every player looked like they were made for this, for playing with brute strength and incredible intellect melded together into one terrifying display of power.
And in the middle of it all was Kidou. Directing and controlling what seemed untameable, like a commander on the battlefield.
Looking at his discouraged teammates, some of which seemed to be close to running away, he realized that it probably shouldn't have excited him as much as it did.

He’s good at math, though, and even if what Kel’s doing is too complicated for him (doubtful) Sunny is good at reading textbooks. So he stands up without a word and makes his way over to stand by Kel at his desk, leaning over to read the problem.
Kel tenses somewhat. Sunny feels it against his side, the way Kel’s warm shoulder seizes. It’s been happening more and more every time they’ve touched recently and Sunny isn’t sure what to think about it, especially because Kel is usually such a physically affectionate person. When Sunny spares a glance at his friend, he sees that Kel has his gaze averted. His face is flushed. Privately, Sunny likes that expression on him. Highlights his freckles. As a kid, Kel would let Sunny poke all of them during naps after picnics.
It probably isn’t good to like now, though. Kel must be really embarrassed. Sunny leans back.
