His breath stutters as he nods, and Kiara can tell it’s killing him to not be able to breathe just as much as it kills John B to watch. It’s taking everything out of JJ, being seen by someone that already thinks so little of him. Kiara’s mom, the only face he can see.

“You’re not, baby,” Anna says, a gentle smile. The warmth only a mother can offer. She pushes the hair back from JJ’s sweaty forehead. “You can go back to pretending you’re big and bad and grown-up in a bit, but for right now— let me help you. Okay?”

Towards the tail end of their time together at the cottage, Ilya starts having terrible tooth pain. The culprit? His wisdom teeth.
To Shane, it’s an easy fix. He’d had his wisdom teeth removed years ago, and neither the procedure nor the recovery had been all that bad. He’d had his parents by his side every step of the way, and he was prepared to provide Ilya with that same level of support. Yup, this would be a cake walk.
To Ilya, it’s a death sentence. He’d had a broken tooth pulled years ago, and it was singlehandedly the most physically excruciating experience of his existence. He’d avoided dentists ever since, and even with Shane by his side, there’s no way he’d be able to do this. Yup, he was gonna die.
