note from a while after I originally posted this: Honestly, this isn’t the best, but I’m gonna keep it up because I’m still proud of it (I had been in a general creative block for a long time before I wrote this, and actually finishing it was a huge accomplishment) and the memories associated with it are very good :D

This time, it was their cat that alerted them of a noise. She lifted her head, before seeming to lock eyes with something. She started to make a low hissing noise, startling Keir from their reading, as they had never heard her make a sound even close to that before.
Suddenly, she leapt up and scrambled out of their lap, tail puffing up and claws out. She ran out of the room, like she was trying to get as far away from the hallway as possible.
That was when they noticed the noise, like an animal sniffing something. The last line of the section they had just read echoed in their mind.
‘Identifying the sounds as fake is your only warning.’
But it was just- it was just their dog.
